Salford Cathedral Choir comprises a combination of auditioned local singers and Choral Scholars. They sing for the 11am Solemn Mass each Sunday, and as well as giving their own concerts, they sing for important feasts and solemnities throughout the year, notably at Christmas and during Holy Week and Easter. Rehearsals take place in Cathedral House on Wednesday from 7.30pm – 9pm and there is normally a rehearsal before each Mass at least an hour beforehand.
The choir’s repertoire spans from Gregorian Chant (plainsong) and Renaissance polyphony (such as music by Byrd, Palestrina, Lassus), through Mozart, Schubert, Fauré, Vierne and Vaughan Williams, to contemporary music, including music by Tamsin Jones, Cecilia McDowall and Amy Summers.
As the mother church of the Diocese, the Cathedral is host to major Diocesan celebrations. In recent years, the choir has also broadcast live on BBC Radio 4 for Midnight Mass and Sunday Worship.
New members are always welcome to join this friendly and committed group of singers. Admission to the choir is by audition. Given the high turn over of repertoire, experience in choral singing as well as good music reading ability is expected.
If you are interested in joining the choir, please get in touch with the Cathedral Director of Music, Alex Patterson alex.patterson@dioceseofsalford.org.uk or come and talk to us after Mass one Sunday.
