Restoration of the Statues

How often we ask the prayers of the saints in time of need and in moments of anxiety! We go to them because we are confident that they will hear us and remember us before God in heaven. The beauty and presence of the statues and images of Our Lord, Our Lady, and the saints in our Churches reminds us that we are not alone and that as Catholics we can find solace, comfort, support, and aid in our prayers before these visual helps to our devotion and to our prayer.

How many times have we called into Church and lit a candle before the Sacred Heart, Our Lady, or a favourite saint? How often do we head straight to the statue or image that we love before all other prayers in Church or after Mass? Fervent are our prayers when we need a petition answering, but oftentimes one can be slow to return thanks with the same fervour as when we needed help.

In the Restoration Project we have at Salford Cathedral, you might consider a contribution – however large or small – towards restoring the statues of Our Lord, Our Lady, and the saints, as an Act of Thanksgiving. How powerful the saints are with God and how much they help us. We ought to be thankful, knowing that, as St Ignatius of Loyola reflected, thanksgiving is the greatest spiritual virtue.

Please consider, as both an Act of Faith in the saints’ powerful intercession before God, and as an Act of Thanksgiving for prayers answered or petitions asked, contributing towards this unique opportunity to restore the statues pictured in the following pages, so that future generations of Catholics can receive the same solace, comfort, support, and aid as we ourselves have known through the intercession of the saints.

God bless you.
