Running for Cathedral Music

Children's Choir (Mass)

This Sunday (22 May), Alex Patterson, our Director of Music and Hannah Whelan, a Cathedral Choir member, are taking part in the Great Manchester Run, running the half marathon and 10K respectively. They are running to help raise money for our Cathedral Music Foundation.

The Music Foundation exists to provide high quality singing and music making opportunities for all, regardless of age, background, experience, or ability. As part of the Schools Singing Programme, we reach over 650 children and young people across Greater Manchester each week and we’re raising money to help support the work of the Foundation to bring the gift of music to all.

The Diocese of Salford joined the National Schools Singing Programme last year thanks to a kindly grant from the Hamish Ogston Foundation. This has allowed us to hire a Choral Director to head the programme – you can apply for this role here. The aim of the Schools Singing Programme is to bring regular whole-class singing into primary schools, fostering a lifelong relationship with sacred music and spirituality. The programme is led by the Cathedral Music Foundation – it’s a fantastic way of opening up musical opportunities for all and connecting our cathedral with families around the diocese. Any donations we receive help us to bring quality musical education to every corner of the diocese.

We wish Alex and Hannah the best of luck in their run!
