We’re excited to announce the return of one of the most popular events at Salford Cathedral, Carols by Candlelight. This service will take place at 7:30pm on Sunday 19th December.
Carols by Candlelight is an opportunity to hear all of our cathedral choirs sing in a beautifully calm and atmospheric environment. It’s a chance for us to gather together, enjoy the wonderful acoustics of Salford Cathedral and to hear Advent readings from Fr Michael.
Alex Patterson, our Director of Music, had this to say about the service:
Carols by Candlelight is always such an atmospheric event and a great opportunity for us to showcase the range of music we sing here at the Cathedral. We have a range of your favourite traditional carols for the congregation to join in with, as well as solo choral items sung by the choirs: from the jaunty ‘Joys Seven’ arranged by Stephen Cleobury to the serene ‘Lux Aurumque’ by Eric Whitacre. We’re also delighted to feature two new pieces in our repertoire: Tamsin Jones’ ‘Noel: Verbum Caro Factum Est’ as well as the world premiere of a new piece written specially for this service, a setting of the medieval poem, ‘Adam lay ybounden’ by Florence Anna Maunders.
We invite you to join us in person for this service; It’s open to all. We understand that despite the cathedral’s commitment to covid safety an in-person visit may not be possible for all those who wish to attend. Carols by Candlelight will therefore be streamed live and recorded on our churchservices.tv profile, which you can find at www.salfordcathedral.co.uk.
